Maternal deaths focus Harsh light on Uganda
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/30/world/africa/30uganda.

This article is about how women in the country of Uganda die during labor due to the unintended aid in the hospitals. Jennifer Anguko was bleeding to death in the maternity ward of an public hospital, no obstetrician  examined her for 12 hours. Ms. Anguko soon was pronounced dead. Ms. Anguko was a popular elected official wanting treatment in a 400 bed hospital , the lawsuit over body might be the first legal test of the African Government to provide maternal care. This brings many questions on the unintended impact of foreign aid on Africa's public health system. Study show that Africa's government has been reducing their own share of domestic spending devoted to health. A finance expert in Uganda’s Health Ministry said the country's health spending had increased, “but not that substantially.” Still, the government set off a bitter domestic debate this spring confirming that it had paid more than half a billion dollars for fighter jets, other military hardware and  triple the amount of its own money dedicated to the entire public health system in the last year. Uganda’s experience shows the limits of the care when a system is poorly managed and lacks the resources to deliver decent services. Dr. Olive Sentumbwe-Mugisa, a Ugandan obstetrician participated in the Health Ministry’s investigations of the deaths of both Ms. Anguko and Sylvia Nalubowa, a second woman named in the lawsuit against the government, and concluded that both women arrived in time to be saved. In its lawsuit filed in March, the Center for Health, Human Rights and Development, a Ugandan nonprofit group, contended that the government violated the two women’s right to life by failing to provide them with basic maternal care. To solve this issue i feel the African government should use their money wisely. There should be money for hospitality tools and health care. They should care for the people who are dying daily because if the lack of hospitality. The group that's  in a position to effect change is the local government and the people affected by the situation. The government should provide  the care they are suppose to be providing that way people heath inst in a bad state neither are their children s. Its probably hard for a poor government to provide to the hospital , but they should even out the money with other money that way things would been such a problem. I doesn't have to be a large amount of money towards the hospital , but enough to improve the maternal deaths of women and their unborn children.

Current Event Assignment # 1

Title : Amanda Knox Freed After Appeal in Italian Court
Source : http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/04/world/europe/amanda-knox-defends-herself-in-italian-court.html

This article is about a 24 year old american girl named Amanda Knox , who was falsely accused of murdering her room mate Meredith Ketcher . Amanda and her Boyfreind(Raffaele Sollecito ) were both arrested and accused of the murder. The 3 students were vacationing and travel in Italy . On November 27 , 2009 Meredith Ketcher was found stabbed in her room. Police believed Amanda And her Boyfreind had to something to do with the murder . The Decision of sentencing Amanda Knox to 26 years and Raffaele Sollecito to 25 years in prison overturned . During the original trial and appeal procecutors tried to make Amanda look as if she was a Terrible young girl despite her court apperance .The case was mostly based on circumstantial evidence and DNA found on the murder weapon which the police handeled and took high analysis on the materials. The Italian Supreme Court overturned the convictions today . After being arrested and prisoned for 4 years Amanda was releaved. Procecutors were highly ashamed and upset . Amanda was Thankful for one her Lawyers  ( Maria Del Grosso )

The siginificance of this event is that Amanda had an oppurtunity to get a second chance . Usually when you sentenced theirs a 50 % chance that they would overturn your case  , but the Italian Supreme court gave her another chance. Another thing thats very significant is Amanda Family and lawyers never gave up , they continued to fight the charges . Amanda was blessed with oppurtunity that most likely impposible to have . This story will have an impact on people who have beem falsely accused , but was still arrested and sentenced. This story would also have a huge impact on the world globally , because the world will then see that you should attempt to give someone a second chance . You may never know what actually happened and thats why they should have gone over evidence and any statments carefully. The world will then see that falsely accusing one has to stop and this might make a change.

Enlightment thinker Beccaria would have agreed with my opinion. Beccaria believed crimainals should be treated kindly and fairly , also belived the Death penalty torture and torment were wrong . Beccaria belief contributed to the 6 and 8 th Admendment giving the right to a speedy trial and no excessive bail or creul and unusual punishment . Beccaria would view my article as interesting yet true , because Amanda case took a long to justify . Beccaria believed in the rights to Justice and Amanda was someone who was a victim of the Justice system wrongly accusing. I think Beccaria would support the situation , because Amanada was sentenced to 26 years at the original trial . And Beccaria would investigate on the evidence they collected in order to sentence her. Beccaria studied the need of reforms in the criminal justice system . Amanda Knox was one who was accused and luckly she wasnt sentenced to life or death . If Amanda was sentenced to life or death without a chance of having the case overturned would be a truely unfair.
